The Rise of Botox Practitioners in the UK: What You Need to Know

Over the past two years, the aesthetics industry in the UK has grown at an incredible pace, but not without concern. As a medical professional working in this field every day, I feel it’s important to talk openly about what’s happening and what it means for patient safety.

Recent reports show that the number of practitioners offering botulinum toxin (Botox) treatments has increased by an astonishing 437% in just two years. To put that into perspective, the industry has grown from around 3,600 practitioners in 2023 to nearly 20,000 in 2025. That kind of growth is significant, and while it reflects rising demand, it also raises serious questions about regulation and safety.

Who Is Actually Carrying Out These Treatments?

One of the most concerning aspects of this growth is who is performing these procedures.

Only around 28% of practitioners are doctors, with the rest made up of nurses, dentists, and a large proportion of non-medical aestheticians. In fact, it has previously been reported that up to 68% of injectable treatments are carried out by non-doctors.

As a doctor, I find this deeply worrying.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not just a beauty treatment. It is a prescription-only medicine. That means it should always involve a proper medical consultation, a qualified prescriber, and a full understanding of facial anatomy, risks, and complications.

My Thoughts as a Medical Practitioner

From my perspective, the issue isn’t that the industry is growing. It’s that it’s growing faster than it can be safely regulated.

I’ve seen first-hand the difference that medical training makes when it comes to:

  • Assessing facial anatomy
  • Managing complications
  • Achieving natural, safe results
  • Knowing when not to treat

The reality is, complications can and do happen. These can range from mild issues like bruising or asymmetry, to more serious concerns such as eyelid drooping, infection, or vascular complications.

When something goes wrong, you need someone who is medically trained, not just in injecting, but in diagnosing and treating complications safely.

The Problem With a “Wild West” Industry

The aesthetics industry has even been described as a “wild west”, and unfortunately, I can understand why.

Treatments are now being offered in:

  • Beauty salons
  • Pop-up clinics
  • Mobile or home environments

Often at significantly lower prices.

While affordability is important, there is a growing trend of patients choosing providers based on cost alone. I completely understand the appeal, but I always say this:

When it comes to your face, safety should never be compromised for price.

Why Choosing the Right Practitioner Matters

As a patient, you deserve:

  • A full medical consultation
  • A practitioner who understands facial anatomy in depth
  • A safe, clinical environment
  • Access to proper aftercare and complication management

Not all providers can offer this.

The rise in complications reported across the UK reflects this gap. Many cases are linked to poorly trained or unregulated practitioners, and unfortunately, patients often only realise the importance of qualifications after something has gone wrong.

My Approach at Dr Clare Taylor Aesthetics

As a fully qualified medical doctor with years of experience, my priority has always been patient safety, ethical practice, and natural results.

Every treatment I carry out is grounded in:

  • Medical knowledge
  • Clinical precision
  • A deep understanding of facial ageing
  • A commitment to doing what is right for the patient—not just what is requested

I take the time to:

  • Carry out thorough consultations
  • Discuss risks honestly
  • Create tailored treatment plans
  • Ensure every patient feels informed, comfortable, and confident

For me, aesthetics is not about quick fixes or trends. It’s about safe, subtle, and evidence-based treatments that enhance your natural features.

Final Thoughts

The aesthetics industry isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s only going to keep growing. But with that growth comes responsibility, both for practitioners and for patients.

My advice is simple:

👉 Do your research

👉 Ask about qualifications

👉 Don’t be afraid to ask questions

👉 Prioritise safety over price

Because when it comes to your face, you deserve nothing less than expert care.

If you’re considering treatment and want honest, professional advice, I’d always recommend starting with a consultation.

I’m here to guide you safely, every step of the way.
